No. While STUNT uses many of the same athletic skills found in cheerleading, it is a separate sport with its own rules, scoring system, season, and competition. STUNT is designed exclusively for athletic competition. In fact, one of the guiding principles behind STUNT is to preserve traditional cheerleading while creating additional athletic opportunities for female athletes.

High School and Junior High/ Middle School STUNT is played during the spring season, typically from February to May. This allows many schools to offer STUNT without conflicting with the traditional fall and winter cheerleading seasons.

For High School STUNT, teams are welcome to play in the 8-person or 12-person format. The 12-person format is the standard version used across most states. Teams typically carry additional athletes on their roster to allow for substitution, skill specialization, and continued program growth.
For Junior High/ Middle School STUNT, teams play in an 8-person format.

Most schools already have much of what they need to start a STUNT program. Practices and games are typically held in a gymnasium with appropriate cheerleading matting. For practices, teams only need 4 mats. If hosting games or tournament, teams need a minimum of 8 mats.

No. Coaches are not required to have previous STUNT coaching experience. USA Cheer and STUNT provide educational resources, training materials, rulebooks, and certifications to help coaches learn the sport. ICOSA also offers guidance, mentorship, and support to help coaches build successful programs in Idaho.

Startup costs vary depending on your school’s existing resources. Many schools already have access to practice space, mats, and equipment, making STUNT more affordable than manty people expect. The required program membership through USA Cheer costs $149 annually. Through your program membership, you can access materials, count sheets, videos, routines, skills grid, etc.
ICOSA works with schools to develop a startup plan that fits their budget and helps identify cost-effective solutions.
